Description: Get out a couple of minis and Karsh then go to town. Hit
predator hard if needed then watch the table carefully and pick your
targets, use your rushes wisely and get a cannon as soon as possible
to give you options and to conserve combat cards if you need to. Save
Beast Meld to get a Rifle or to guarantee downing a primary target if
you already have one.
Deck gets trucking on only 12-13 expenditure and really kicks-off
after you have a piece. Use Karsh's in-built rush to cycle into
essential cards and don't worry too much about losing the one point
buddies. Bleeding the Vine won me a round and Secure Haven the final,
they are essential tech. Bleeding the Vine is an amazingly powerful
card.
I think in hindsight I might try and find room for one more rush and
one more Freak, deck is tight though. Built first to take down other
combat decks, it seems to handle tourneys quite nicely as well. I had
a great time torporing waves of minions with it. Karsh is a madman.
That is all.

Deck Name: Brick in a sock

Description: Ummmm... pretty obvious bleed or rush with lots of Pot
minions. Use Computer Hacks to force blocks or bleed for steady twos.
Bring back diab'ed minions with Hand of Conrad. Use Tributes as soon
as you get them, don't be afraid to Tribute to empty cos most of
minions can use Hungry Coyote when you get it to fill back up. Change
of Targets draw out wakes etc and make the deck a tiny bit faster and
much more annoying by adding to the total number of actions possible.
Ivory Bow is in mainly to contest because its about the most common
'worst single thing' you can come across and is pretty useful on its
own. Two non-pot Sabbat weenies are there to make up numbers, would do
without and go down to twelve but have run out of crypt a few times
which is no fun.
Also was a bit of an experiment on a few different levels. Has put my
mind to rest that a weenie pot Sabbat Embrace is indeed missed deck
opportunity #23 **sigh**
Wanted to try a version with a lot of solid masters and it worked
pretty well - what you lose in cycling you more than make up for in
pool gain so that works for me. A lot of the masters (18 assuming a
minion is out) are playable 'out of the box' so you don't often have
them sat in your hand... which is nice.
A goodly amount of pool gen for a Pot deck and two AI's coupled with
numbers backrushTM makes for a pretty resilient Pot horde that keeps
on coming.
Anyway enough crap here is 'Brick in a sock'

Was pretty pleased with the deck's performance on the day apart from the
stalling in the final. In hindsight I would put one more Debate and
another 2nd Trad or two. No idea what to take out though... maybe a
Praxis I think. I upped the amount of rush in the deck and put in a
shade more blood gain which was a good move but I have an ongoing debate
:o) about the right amount of 2nd trads - Nine I reckon is good. I could
have used at least one or two more in the final and could very probably
use the extra in most games. You can get up to scary levels of hand
damage and a mass of range with a few Debates on the deck.
Probably should have either the Ivory Bow or a Starshell Launcher in as
well.
IMO a proven, solid all-rounder.

DECK: Boirds and guns:
Rob Treasure's Blaise Deck
Here, thanks to Rob, is a startlingly-effective intercept combat deck
based on a very useful !gangrel girly. There seems to be a lot of
intercept-combat around these days, i saw several such decks at
Zopfcon and even played one myself. i like the ani/cel background for
the guns here, and think this might be the best way to use the new
concealed weapon. Except where noted, all comments are the author's
[ie Rob Treasure].
Deck Name: Boirds and guns
Description: Uses Blaise, so I guess qualifies as a !Gangrel deck. A
bit of a different wall / wear down deck, making use of CEL which I
don't seem to be able to make up a deck without lately. Crypt should
be 12, think I have tried versions with no Parmenides and no Jim. What
do you reckon ?? [editor's note: maybe lose 1 Sarah Brando?] The deck
has also had 5 Blood Dolls instead of a Heidelberg and I have been
requested by a few people to try it with Raptors instead of Ravens :o)
Not sure they can wear the cost though. I think 3 is just the right
amount of Jacks. Just enough to start some sh*t and win the end game
for you but not too many, eating slots and popping up at rubbish times.
Can't recall what I ditched to get down to 90 ???? [editor's note -
maybe one Forced, one pursuit? But i can see it is tight!] Army of Rats
focus the Jack damage on your prey so they are well worth the 2 slots.
Tried to slot in Dreams and Powerbase Montreal but there is just no room
at the Inn.
Enjoy playing it very much, has enough poke to take down a lot of
combat decks [Editor's note: Rob's opponents when he played this
first/most recently were Barney Baker, Martin Cubberley, Jon Cooper
and Matt Green - pretty much the toughest competition you can get
in the UK]. Terror Frenzy is a wondrous card. Minor for anti weapon
and no back to close range and superior for card intensive combat
decks. You CAN play Cats after a Psyche (despite popular belief)
so the Cats really are essential to the deck, once you get a couple
of Intercept retainers the Cats become wakes.

A real abomination of a deck, constructed initially taking advantage
of Anneke's brilliant special to control the table but evolving into
something much nastier. Interestingly I only had to use her special
twice on the day and both of those times were in the final and saved
VP's from dropping to someone else (not an acceptable situation :o).
A evil VP sniper of a deck that puts the table under constant
pressure and drops atom bombs with alarming regularity. The sleazy
2nd trad / Obedience (hmmm I do like the picture on Sabbat
Obedience :o))) / Majesty combo allows you to stay untapped and
block loads of actions. In the second round I was under serious
pressure from Matt Stockton's weenie Pre deck and was pleased with the
constant ability to block 5/6/7 weenies a turn whilst laying down the
master phase bombs.

A bastard relation of the Ventrue / Gangrel deck that I posted in the Jan
2001 newsletter, but it works a lot better. Instead of forcing Protean, it
uses the disciplines already available and a lot of Daring the Dawns. Nice
angle with the Cull the Herds taking out any allies which stop the Daring
the Dawn *and* allow you a peek at your prey's hand.
It is a version of the powerful Ventrue toolbox deck with a nasty
unblockable aspect. Interestingly, it was my number 2 choice for Gencon
2001. Martin Cubberley needed a deck on the day so I foolishly leant it to
him :o) nearly did me in.

I have fully bought into the school of thought lately of building decks that
are the right size for the game but this one is HARD to keep below 90.
As always the main problem is getting the balance of cards right for
efficient flow and the required number of actions, mods., combat etc. I am
always tempted to put more Kiss of Ra in the deck, one version had 4 in and
seemed to work pretty damn well. Being 'Ra snogged' by a vampire rescuing
itself from torpor is no fun at all.

Pretty standard weenie deck construction with a nasty Dramatic Upheaval /
Anarch Revolt element. I have just taken out 2 Life Boons, not sure if they
are worth while in the deck ? Might go for a Succubus Club and a Parthenon
instead ? The Club can do pretty much the same thing and the Parthenon would
be useful if the Rumours couldn't be pushed through.

GenCon UK September 2001
Winning Deck by Rob Treasure
It’s a reworked version of the old classic, built to handle most
threats but a field of pure focus would not be the best. Other than
my various Ventrue creations and the retired LoP. deck it is probably
the one that I have spent most time over the years tweaking and analysing.
Interestingly it is also the deck that I have scored the least VP’s (1)
with in a tourney with ? Metagames hey !!
It tackles most common ‘tourney standard’ decks very well and slugs it
out with all but pure Gangrel Potence and Tzimisce Scorpion Sting/Blood
of Acid. Got to be wary of Kiss of Ra and Hostile Takeover, they are
really the only two things that really worry it consistently.

2 Wake with Evening's Freshness
I did have another Sudden Reversal and 2 Leathers in up to a few minutes
before the tourney but traded them out for the Guardian Angel,
another Disarm and a 7th Second Tradition.
The Guardian Angel was amazingly useful and came out in most of the rounds,
the 7th Second was exactly the right amount on the day. Very happy with the
decks performance, it had enough whack to take out Beast and friends in a
pure combat deck and was ‘focussed’ enough to apply consistent pressure on
my prey all the time.

Deck name: Ventrue commons
Deck thrown together to prove that you can make a decent Ventrue deck
from commons / uncommons. I was outraged at the thread a while back that
suggested that you couldn't do it !! A fair bit of 'toolbox' in there
to defend and attack a lot of different threats.
I know a few people that play regular booster drafts and conduct experiments
with 10, 20, 30 boosters and various clans. I do think you can make a half
decent deck from most of the original VTES clans. The real idea is to make
something you are comfortable playing and to work in rare / better cards
when you get or TRADE, TRADE, TRADE for them. Did I mention trading ??

For some time I have been trying to make a workable deck with the Ventrue
and Gangrel. Following some helpful (and not so helpful ...sarcastic
bastards, you'll get yours) emails from the last Newsletter I have cut the
deck down a bit and am looking for a few opinions. I have tried to include
as many action cards as possible, I think there is 19- 20 in at the moment
for the first, pre Force of Will action.
Seems to have inadvertently gone a bit toolboxy, oh well worse things happen
at sea.
Have not given it a proper airing yet, whaddaya think I should add / get rid
of ? Are there enough Force of Wills ?

I found this really odd to play, far to diverse to be effective but great
fun when it gets rolling. Ideally you want Ethan Locke out stealing master
disciplines and Ian throwing all sorts of weirdness around. I think this was
version 1 of about 3 or 4 that also did not really work. I later tried to
use Infernal Familiar and Daring the Dawn to burn vamps with a Soul Gem - I
was in a low patch alright, don't take the piss.
It is great to be able put in all the powerful minor discipline cards to a
deck like this. Flesh of Marble, Temptation, Blessings of Chaos etc. etc.

A good example of a quasi-toolbox deck. Tried to take a different tack
from the norm and put a version of the old 'prevent/pulled fangs' kick
back in their tail. For my money there are not enough pool attacking
cards or intercept in there. Not sure what I would take out to make room.
I have put it together but have not played it yet. Anyone with any
opinions?? Enough prevention?

risks, too easy to sit tight and remain reactive. Meshenka is my
firm favourite, backed up by a stack of other great vamps (Dragos,

Hostile-Parity Sleaze
by Rob [i like dirt] Treasure
[Rob is getting married on October 14th. I assume by now his fiancee is aware
of his predilections. If not, i think some kind soul should tell her.]
Creator's notes: Another variant of the old ventrue Power deck. Even more
offensive as the hostiles and parity shifts work well together. Crypt is a
bit odd, could do with one or two mid-pointers with obfuscate but in the end
better off going for good old Sir Walt. Would not have done so well if not
for the total lack of combat at the last tournament. Went for more obfuscate
which worked well due to the usual and amazing lack of intercept at Portsmouth.

Weenie Trap Unflinching Filth
By Rob Treasure
Creator's notes: A bit open to heavy agg damage burning you but can overrun
most decks with numbers. Obviously key to get out one or two with dom or DOM
to deflect and bleed. Possibly gone a bit mad with numbers of trap and undead
persistence but seemed to work ok. In hindsight would put more bleed in.

Rob’s Comments:
"I wanted to try to show that my old faves can still rock
and roll in a tournament arena. The deck harps back to the
Ventrue Steamroller deck of GenCon97 with revisions for the
7/7 rulings which DID NOT help the Ventrue [Pulled Fangs,
Fame/Day Op, Tomb etc etc] needed to be done however.
It fits in most of the "Classic Cards" as well as a slice
of obfuscate in place of the multitude of Day Ops. The
value of Master phases/cards are realised as they are laid
down 2 at a time – no one can deny the effectiveness of a
double Hostile in the right hands. Might take out the
revelations, they are useful to get rid of intercept,
wakes or power cards but more Daring the Dawn or Hostiles
would be more useful. I like the crypt, obviously powervamp
Arika and Queen Anne are the mainstay but either of the
other princes with an obf skill card can kick ass. Lady
Luck can boot you in the nuts with your draw of four but
as long as one of the biggies come out you are ok.
The deck has very little intercept. I tend to save the
2nd Trads and the Rumor Mill for emergencies and rely on
Hostiles, Banishments, Deflections and agitation as
"offensive defense". It has a lot of powerful one-shot
plays, biding your time, slotting together a good hand
and playing it well can take out two or cripple three
players in a turn. The deck is all about laying low and
balancing tables then pouncing when you are very sure
or taking a calculated risk [my kind of deck].
I was impressed with [and scared by!] a couple of decks
at the tourney. Niki’s Trap/Undead Persistence deck was
cool, I liked the obvious but overlooked inclusion of
superior Dom. Will’s horrible allies blender deck is
great, the hurt comes from an unexpected source and the
sheer numbers are hard to handle. 19 players. Could be
wrong but no Malk. S&B decks, F* ***** Hooray."
He’s not wrong about the lack of cheese. Only one tap
and bleed deck, too! It was also good to see Nathan's
!Tre combat deck and Garry's big blokes doing well.

But Rob's winning deck. He wants a cool name for it, but at 7 o' clock
in the morning, the best we could come up with was the Lazverinus All
Skills All Stars deck. Better name suggestions on a postcard please.
The deck doesn't look much but what has to be taken into account is the
calibre of the player, who knows exactly when to play and when not to,
and ensures a good cycle of his cards to get exactly what he needs, when
he needs it. Apologies if any cards are mentioned more than once, total
the number of them if it happens. There are 86 cards in the deck, and
12 vampires.

Deck name: Anton - Blaise oddness
Created by: Rob T
Description: Good solid fun deck, bring out Anton or Blaise and bauble
an Assault Rifle on, get a Ghoul Retainer on someone and go to town.
Key Cards to protect - Heidelburg Castle, Ghoul Retainer, vamps with Blood
Dolls on. Obviously does not like S:CE but takes on a lot of combat decks
in pick up and fun games. Can't remember what I took out to get down to 90.

Deck name: Malkav Spikey Bleeders
Created by: Rob T
Description: My version of the Rob / Legbiter contest special. If everyone
has an unlucky deck, this is mine (or maybe it is just shit??). I went more
for the bleed with claw / Rotschreck, Earth Meld and Flesh of Marble for
defence and deterrent. Did not do well in the beats intensive metagame at
the time. Might drag it out again, Malks are one of the clans that I think
have a lot more scope.
