"Ah. Dreams. How long has is been since I last dreamt? How many hundred of years." "Bah! Now is not the time for dreams. Now is the time for war and conquest!" "But yet I do not feel the time is right, yet." "Damn that Sikkim! Accelerating my timetable against both Runako and Wrangel, I am now grasping at for any advantage. Even now, I question the wisdom of initiating the move to bring Jack into my very domain. I do not know if I can hold both Caceras and Sophia while Jack dispenses his special brand of justice. And I do not want to think of what would occur if he should ever find I am in the city, I would fear for my existence." "Yes, Sikkim, I too know how to play the game and in this meeting it shall be I who will be victorious!" After paying the cab driver, Benito stepped from the car and stood in front of the city Coroner's Office. Walking toward the rear entrance, Benito grew concerned of the bad turn of events since he entered the city upon Caldwell's request. While becoming a Bishop was the first of many personal goals, Benito started to think he wasn't in complete control of his own decisions, as if they were being guided somehow. A sheathe of bloody sweat bathed his body as he fought for control of his thoughts and the path they were guiding him along. Coming to a stop, Benito silently struggled with the inner demons in his thoughts. Finally he reversed the blood loss as he conquered his fears. Smoothing the non-existent wrinkles from his suit, he again proceeded toward the building's rear door. Entering the building, Benito gained the attention of the bored guard sitting at a desk. "Evening. Can I help you?" "Good evening. I am here to identify a John Doe your office recently picked up." Looking down on his clipboard the guard frowned. "Excuse me, sir, but can I have your name?" "Certainly, however, I would appreciate it if you would look at me when you speak to me," Benito stated bluntly. Startled by the tone and the request the young guard looked up and was immediately transfixed by Benito's stare. "Now my pet, you and I shall go and awaken my young friend from his deep slumber." Phillip felt the hot vitae pouring down his throat before he knew he was swallowing it. His eyes opened to the sight of Benito drinking a man in a uniform while holding him with one arm. Benitio's other arm was being used to feed him directly, a sort of macabre blood transfusion. Tasting the blood's potency and hearing the howl of the beast within his mind, Phillip was unable to stop his feeding as red fog settled over his eyes. Eventually he heard Benito yelling into his ear while forcibly removing his arm from his grasp. "If you are still hungry, then have the young lady there in the corner. Lord, you are a mess." Using the newly gained blood to heal, the wounds upon Phillip's body knit together. As he healed, a deep feeling of emptiness and a ravenous need for more blood grew rapidly forming an undeniable compulsion. Stepping down from the metal platform he was laying upon, he tested his footing. Finding it firm, the red haze of the beast urged him to feed. Giving in, Phillip rushed the young woman who was gagged and tied to a chair by the door. Her eyes red with fear and tears grew wider as Phillip descended upon her. In madness he ripped her throat out with his fangs. The hot taste of blood filled his mouth as his consumed her, yet his need for blood was not met. The beast pressed its advantage and swung Phillip around looking for more prey to rent and tear open with both fangs and claws. Settling his eyes upon no one other than Benito, a deep guttural growl came from him as he moved toward his brother. Benito watched Phillip rip into the helpless woman he had left and realized the hunger raged uncontrolled within his young brother. Deciding Phillip was still of unsound mind, Benito attempted to help Phillip regain control of the beast. "Phillip, look at me.", commanded Benito. Phillip looking into Benito's eyes and shrugged off his brother's dominating command. Not to be undone, Benito forced blood into his command. The effect upon Phillip was immediate. Phillip froze, blinked and then relaxed. "Benito! What is going on?" queried Phillip as he looked around the room and saw the torn bodies of the guard and the female intern upon the floor. "That my dear brother shall be answered after we get you out of here and properly fed." Within Caceras' office. Caceras was startled upon the sight of Sophia as she entered into his office unannounced. "What is the name of the hell happened to you? I thought you were off to make an offshore payment, not getting into a fight with a pride of lions." Stated Caceras as he pulled upon a bell rope. Sophia wearily sat down upon one of the office's chair. "Let's just say that I had a bad night and leave it at that, huh?" "Come now my dear." "Get off the 'my dear' shit right now Caceras! I've never been your dear and never will be. I've just had a rough time facing down some of Caldwell's whelps who have a perchance for phosphorus bullets and grenades and I am a little tired and drained." A manservant knocked upon the open doorway with a decanter and two glasses on a tray. "Ah yes, just place them on the table there and then leave us. quickly!" The servant quickened his pace as he hurriedly placed the tray within reach of Sophia and left the room, closing the door upon his exit. "Drink up, Sophia. I had heard some excitement had occurred in one of the city's parks but did not attribute them to you or the excitement you obviously participated in." Sophia picked up the decanter, tossed the glass stopper aside to shatter upon the floor to Caceras's dismay, and drained it's contents within moments. Closing her eyes as the blood within her started to heal the burns and correct her disheveled appearance, Sophia relaxed for the first time since entering the room. The decanter slipped from her fingers and fell toward the floor. Caceras immediately took notice and quickly caught it in a cushion of darkness, and then removed it from sight. "Feeling better are we?" "Yes. Thank you, Caceras. Do you mind if I just sit here and mend for a while?" "Of course. is there anything else I can do for you?" After a moments silence. "Be a dear and ring for just one more, I promise I will take better care of your glassware this time." With a smile, Caceras again pulled upon the bell rope. Silence filled the room as the door opened after a brief knock and Caceras' manservant came in with just a decanter and gently handed it to Sophia before turning and leaving the room. "May I inquire as to whether or not you were successful in making the payment?" Sophia snorted out loud as she carefully removed the glass stopper and stared at Caceras. "Caceras, don't be an ass or I will fling this stopper against the wall faster than you can stop. Of course I set up the payment." "I am so glad. That means our guest should be arriving within the next 24 hours." "Aghh. Don't remind me. Let me ask again, are you mad? Taking the services of Jack is like dealing with an infernalist, somewhere, somehow you will get burned." "Sophia. tsk tsk," Caceras said mockingly. "You know I've dealt with Jack before. He and I are old acquaintances. Besides I always ensure I have an out whenever I deal with the bastard." Caceras stated with a smile. "Oh great," Sophia replied rolling her eyes, "am I the out this time or do you have someone else in mind if Jack starts getting out of control?" "Someone else. No matter, you do have to admit he does get the job done." "I don't have to admit to anything unless I want to. And right now I don't." Caceras laughed while Sophia drained the last bit of vitae from the decanter and gently placed it and it's stopper atop the tray in front of her. "Either way, Jack will be here tomorrow and then the hunt will begin!" announced Caceras with a wild gleam in his eyes. "Always looking for the little dramas in every situation, don't you?" inquired Sophia as a knock upon the door gained both their notices. "Come." Caceras' manservant entered, walked toward Caceras and handed over a telegram. Immediately turning around, the servant left the room without a sound. After opening the message and reading it, Caceras frowned. "What is it? One moment your on top of the world and the next you act as if you've been declared Camarilla. Cough it up." "It appears that I may have to expand my proposal with Jack upon his arrival." "Expand it? What can be all that bad that you need to do something like renegotiate with that prick in the middle of a job?" "This." stated Caceras as he handed the telegram to Sophia. Across town. "NO! It can not be! How could I not have heard until now? Damn that Sikkim to the hell he was spawned in clouding everyone's minds until it is too late. Bah! My network of pawns have grown careless and it is time to deal with their supposed master before I make my exit with what resources I can muster." Thought Runako as he left his abode to confront Caldwell not as the peon, Maldavis but as his master come to punish a servant. At the Archbishop's residence later that evening. Caldwell sipped from a champagne flute when the doors of his office were kicked apart. The flute fell to the floor as Caldwell turned in an instant rage to confront the offender that dared to damage his home. "What is the meaning of this outrage," demanded Caldwell when he spied Maldavis standing at the entrance of his ruined doorway. "The outrage is having to masquerade as one of your chickshit whipping boys as long as I have." Replied Maldavis/Runako. "It is time to pay the piper his due you worthless relic. I relied upon you to know what was occurring in the city and all you do is preen yourself." Caldwell launched himself across the room toward Maldavis/Runako. Maldavis/Runako slapped Caldwell aside with the ease of an adult against a child. "Your pitiful antics will do you no good, Caldwell. Your time within this world is over and I have come to collect the bill." "No! You are just a worthless disobedient shit from the old world." Caldwell rasped as he picked himself up from the floor. "It is you who shall die this night and it will be by my hand!" Caldwell willed his blood to give him speed and was surprised when Maldavis/Runako caught him by the face and flipped him into the air while slashing abdomen open with his other hand. Caldwell slammed into the oak paneling and fell onto the floor. Maldavis/Runako approached Caldwell, reached down and picked up the non-resistant Archbishop. "I think it is time for you to leave." And with that, Runako sank his fangs into Caldwell and fed until all was left was dust on the floor. Runako then turned and left the former Archbishop's home in search of Benito and Phillip with a smile. Early next evening. "Jack. Do come in." greeted Caceras. "Hmm." Answered Jack as he approached Caceras and shook his extended hand. "It has been a long time, my friend." "Yes, indeed it has, old friend." Jack looked around the room and noticed Sophia sitting quietly in the corner. "Sophia. A delight to again rest my eyes upon your radiant beauty after so many years. I sincerely hope we can overcome the difficulties that caused us to part during our last encounter." "Humph. Is that what you call it? I thought it was the contract that you had against all Sabbat members in Berlin that forced my sudden departure from your presence." "Ha ha ha ha. Always the one to cut to the chase weren't you." Chuckled Jack as he shook his head. "And speaking of cutting to the chase, what my friend is the cause of your request for my being here?" "I am having a problem with 2 distinct cases of vermin within the city that require culling. The first is some fragrant and foppish Toreadors within the city bounds and the other is this." as Caceras handed over the telegram to Jack. A wide smile crept over Jack's face and his eyes started to shine with a light all of they're own and he slowly started to walk toward the other side of the room. "Are you serious? This is too good to be true." Exclaimed Jack, "Ah, I have wait centuries for your Sikkim, to come out of hiding. I wonder who it is that seems to have gained his ire here within this city. Hmmm, it can only be one of two old nemeses, Roberto or Runako. And with your Toreador infestation, I would be willing to bet on Runako, initially. This is just too delicious." Turning around and looking directly at Caceras, "My old friend, you will be receiving the cheapest services anyone has received from me in over a thousand years. Let the games begin!" Jack stated with a smile. Midnight on Main Street that evening. Runako walked down the empty streets fuming over the turn of events when he noticed the sudden silence that hung within the air. Immediately recognizing danger, Runako stopped and willed himself a piece of the wall. "Runako. hiding will do you no good against ones who are both masters of knowing what will be and deception." Whispered an ethereal voice. "Who are you and where are you? Do you think your ability of obfuscation will protect you? I too am a master in piercing the veils of the mind and seeing all as it should be." "Pride has always been one of your failings Runako and tonight it will be your undoing as I come to take you before another." "Another? Take me? You are trying to be funny, if so I am not laughing. As it is you are trying my patience and my time is limited." "I do not believe you will be leaving so soon, old friend. Notice if you will my followers who close upon your location even as we speak." Runako turned his head and started seeing figures walking toward him from all directions. Then he heard the voices and knew instantly to whom he was dealing with. "Sikkim. only you would send your pitiful childer against me, surely you don't think they will hold me down for you." "Yes Runako, but not the few you see now, but they will soon be joined with others." At that Runako saw for the first time, as if a veil had been lifted from his mind, the hundreds of kindred moving toward him from all directions. With an abrupt knowledge that he would not survive the encounter sought an escape from the trap that had been laid. Willing the blood to move him move, Ranuko's movements became a blur as he ran toward the thinnest grouping of Malkavians facing him when a piercing agony struck his mind and the hoard fell upon him. Allowed the beast to overwhelm him as he tried to filter out the howling that ate into his mind. Fangs and claws flashed, ripping and tearing anything that came within reach and still the hoard came forward. Blood flowed freely down the asphalt. Runako grew weaker as the seconds ticked but was unable to concentrate enough to heal the damage being inflicted upon him. Suddenly a new sound moved through the crowd. As screams and wailing overcame the gibbering the Malkavians were making. The piercing scream within Runako's mind ceased suddenly leaving him mentally numb while he tried to reorient himself to the task of surviving the blood loss and locating his savior. Willing the last remaining blood within him to heal the worst of injuries, Runako turned at last to face his unexpected ally and stared into the smiling face of Jack. Jack with a flame-thrower pointed at him to be exact. "You!" "Hi Runako. Bye Runako." Jack stated deadpan as he enveloped Runako with flames. The sounds of pure agony issued forth from Runako's lips. "Ah, we can't have you burn to dust just yet my old friend. You have a debt to pay and I fully intend to collect before you pass." Quickly bring out a flame extinguisher, Jack hosed Runako down and put out the flames. Moving swiftly, Jack knelt down beside his fallen and burned prey and whispered, "No one ever gets away from Smiling Jack, Runako, you know that." Then taking the helpless Runako into his arms, Jack turned Runako into centuries old dust as he drew out the last of his prey's undead life and vitae. - - - - - - - - - - - A discussion of cards. With the entrance of Sabbat War, the Lasombra clan gained new cards to continue their drive toward dominance within the V:TES world. Blanket of the Night was previously discussed in Lasombra Newsletter Nov 2000 and from that I shall carry on with the new Sabbat War cards. As a whole, the Lasombra gained some outstanding cards to enhance the clan's inherent disadvantages. This article will highlight the use of two such cards. The first is Black Metamorphosis and the second is Darkness Within. Black Metamorphosis - Obtenebration Action Cost 2 blood Text - Normal - Put this card on the acting vampire. A vampire may have only one Black Metamorphosis. This vampire gets one optional additional strike per round. Superior - As above, and this vampire gets an optional press once each combat. Though this card is considered rare, it is a permanent gem for the Lasombra clan as a whole. This card is the only way any Lasombra can give out an additional damaging strike through their standard discipline set. As is stood prior to Sabbat War, many Lasombra players took their lessons on how to perform combat effectively from either the school of hard knocks or the Nosferatu clan and their original newsletter poster Peter Bakija. Reasoning for this was to be able to enable Lasombra minions the ability to take down an opposing minion to torpor, no matter what their capacity. Peter wrote, and still continues to write occasionally, excellent posts detailing how to dish out damage properly for all one hit wonders. Now with the entrance of Black Metamorphosis, the Lasombra do not necessarily need to make their first "love tap" count when squaring off with an opposing minion. They instead can work with lower costing Potence combat cards to provide the same damage potential as before. The superior aspect of the card, giving an optional press, is also a life saver during the times when dropping a opponent in the first round doesn't success as planned. The ability of the permanent press can allow you to continue (against a opponent you believe can not hurt you seriously) or to bail out of a bad situation (a.k.a. Trapped in combat with a Tremere or Tremere Antitribu) by pressing to end. The cost of two blood, though, is somewhat high for a card that only provides an additional strike and a press at superior. I believe that regaining the card's cost should be fairly easy to regain with a readily accessible Taste of Vitae during the next combat your Metamorphosed minion enters. Keep in mind though that based upon recent posts it is not legal to use both Black Metamorphosis and an Arm of the Abyss (at superior) for a total of 2 additional strikes. This is based upon the ruling that you can only use one card effect to gain additional strikes. So making a deck that provides intercept (not really the Lasombra's strongest suit but feasible) with Black Metamorphosis's, I would suggest a few Arms of the Abyss in those dire instances where you minion could be faced with certain torpor by whatever means. Darkness Within - Obtenebration Combat Pre-Range Cost 1 blood Text - Normal - Put this card into play before range is determined. Once each round, during strike resolution, move 1 blood (or life) from the opposing minion to this card (even at long range). Burn this card when combat ends. This vampire gains half of the blood (rounded up) from this card when it is burned. A minion can play only one Darkness Within each combat. Superior - As above, with an optional maneuver. This has to be one of my new favorite combat cards for the Lasombra that came out of the Sabbat War set. This card pays for itself in the end and the blood/life loss is not preventable as it is not damage, so I try to include at least two in any deck I make with the Lasombra at this time. Unfortunately, the card does get short changed in a Strike: Combat Ends (S:CE) environment as the blood/life loss does not occur until the strike resolution phase of combat. Meaning you have paid for a card with no means of recoup the costs. However, using the card coupled with the standard Immortal Grapple to cancel the ill effects of Dodges and S:CE, allows the card to function as advertised. From my understanding of the rules regarding Strike/Damage Resolution, the blood/life loss should occur at the same time as stolen blood. A nice side effect of the card is if you are sent to torpor, the card's effect of regaining blood at the end of combat still takes effect. So the card tends to work independently in your favor once played and combat is not ended prematurely. In a non-Tremere environment, like in Portsmouth, this card should do fairly well when coupled with Thrown Gates and Traps to give you the maneuverability necessary to remove your minion from harm while it operates in conjunction with your damaging strikes and presses. With careful planning and the lack of S:CE's, one should be able to decimate one's opponent while gaining blood the entire time. Couple the above with Taste of Vitae's, an individual should be able to have a fully functional combat deck that searches out and destroys individual minions and then Minion Taps to regain pool prior to looking for the next "gas station" to fill your minion again that turn. (Theoretically) If anyone has already built a deck following this concept, please let me know with a listing of the deck. I will be all too happy to post it. - - - - - - - - - - - A Perspective. - Beating the Odds It is again a new year for the once "dead" game of Vampire: the Eternal Struggle. And again we in the V:TES community have beaten the odds placed against us and have actually surpassed them. With White-Wolf's gamble to pick up V:TES from Wizards of the Coast and again try their hand at a collectable card game took guts after their previous attempts failed or were being cut. The interface between the players, Princes and White-Wolf staff has created a success story that surprisingly hasn't really been told outside of the gaming community and it's various magazines. The second printing of Sabbat War was approved as the initial run sold out the first day they became available to the distributors. The success of the game with the hardcore drive of it's player base has now led White-Wolf to make the long awaited expansion for all the Independent Clans (Assamites, Followers of Set, Giovanni and Ravnos). I currently do not know the date for it's release, but I am hoping it follows the same pattern of sales as the Sabbat War expansion did in Oct 2000. I am now waiting to see what this year has in store for our growing community now that National Qualifiers are being drawn up for Championships later in the year. So, here is a toast to all of us. Keep the faith, use your imagination and keep on bleeding! - - - - - - - - - - - Several decks have been sent to me from a couple of sources as of late. Tim Eijpe from Netherlands frequently discusses deck ideas with me on the Lasombra and to this date I believe I remember him telling he has over 15 decks constructed, all Lasombra decks. (Whew) My hat is off to you Tim, I know I have nowhere near the number of cards you have to even try to duplicate it. I have also recently been given the honor of including a deck from Skaffen from Munich. Thank you, Skaffen. I hope to see you sometime this year. Enough said on that, below is a deck idea that Tim ran in my direction. The first take is the draft he sent and following it is one of the agreed upon updated formats we felt improved upon the initial deck. Lasombra Shadow Power (Take 1 ) Created by: Tim Eijpe Description: A Lasombra Interceptor/Torpor inducing deck using both Obtenebration and Dominate, as it's primary disciplines. Forward momentum of the deck is tied to it's bleed capability but it really leans toward the permanent removal of opposing minions by dropping them into torpor via Entombment and then intercepting the rescue action. Bleed defense is both intercept and deflections. To combat the S:CE environment, the limited use of Hidden Lurkers are provided to place all offenders who don't fight fair to a rapid drop to torpor. Possible diablerie is an option with either Mitchell or Aaron if the need arises. I would never consider the deck to be utilized in a tournament setting, it is strictly an experimental deck. Though in retrospect, I believe I can possibly generate up some kind of deck that would successfully utilize the card in a better light. At this time, however, this was the only thing that came to mind. On the topic of Shadow Twin, I believe the card may become an essential to many Lasombra decks, as it is actually the perfect card to harass any Sneak and Bleed or Political deck that are not necessarily your predator or prey. This could slow play down considerably, allowing the slow building Lasombra player time to fortify their position. Oh well, just an idea on the card. As this deck is experimental, I am always open to suggestions on how to improve the deck.
