What are you doing to demo the game to potential new players?
The demo process in Gothenburg is about the same as Damnans. We have
the following setup:
1) We set up a date (with info in advance in the store we use) to
attract a greater attendance
2) We use the demo decks for demoing. We hand out the demo decks and
40 counters (IKEA bought) for them to keep.
3) We give a basic introduction to the WoD based on the roleplaying
game (and novels), also mentioning the rich theme and player
interaction.
4) We go through the basic concepts of the game saying only as much as
the demo decks make use of (in terms of card types etc).
5) Once the players begin to play we usually seat them in tables of
three (no contesting).
6) Combat is described when the first successful block has been made
(to lessen the amount of talk before they actually play the game).
Same with the referendum, described when the first political action
has not been blocked.
7) Once the demo is over they are free to repeat play. For this we
also have pre-cons (from 3rd Edition and Keepers of Tradition) which
we lend out, or they can play again with their demo decks.
8) Finally, we try to invite them to bi-weekly/monthly gaming
occasions in the store where we provide the same pre-cons if they want
to play more.
9) We also tell them that the amount of cards available in Gothenburg
means they don't have to worry too much about purchasing, people tend
to borrow cards fairly heavily for tournaments, basically invalidating
the "I have no cards" argument.
Success rate:
The attendance for our demo occasions have always been pretty decent
(between 5-15) and many enjoy the demo and the game. Many show
interest in playing again.
Since V:TES is a bit difficult to just start with alone and other CCGs
are easier, many drop off too (or we do not meet them again). We have
maybe 10% who are truly willing to play (and play tournaments) and we
try to get these to play as much as we can, however this is very much
dependent on the time the demo-people have for this kind of additional
gaming (most of us have a pretty busy un-life as it is).
